What is the HCG Diet? The HCG Diet is the product of the research of A.T.W. Simeons and it postulates, based on his findings, that a person can lose up to one pound of unwanted, unhealthy, abnormal fat per day by eating a strict low calorie diet and supplementing with HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadatropin) and B-12. A history and overview of this amazing diet is outlined below...

The tendency to accumulate abnormal fat can be viewed as a metabolic disorder similar to diabetes. The percentage of the population in America today that is overweight or medically obese is now approaching 66%. Diabetes as an outgrowth of this increase in obesity is also significantly on the rise.

A.T.W. Simeons studied the problem of obesity for 40 years and has taken his research over that time and applied it to the science of weight loss.

What is the HCG Diet? He found that the body contains three different types of fat. The first type, structural fat, supports and protects the organs of the body. Structural fat also protects the coronary arteries and forms a supportive layer of fat to maintain smooth skin.

The second type of fat is normal fat which is utilized by the body as a reserve fuel source to supplement the energy requirements of the body when they exceed what is ingested by food supplies. The reserves of normal fat are located throughout the body and can be easily called upon for excess energy when needed.

The third type of fat which is entirely abnormal typically accumulates around the waist, hips, buttocks, thighs and arms. While abnormal fat is also a potential emergency fuel source, it is not readily available to the body in a nutritional emergency and is more difficult for the body to access and utilize. Once excess caloric intake has been stored as abnormal fat it is only utilized to protect against starvation, and hence is very difficult to get the body to burn as an alternate energy source.

As his research into the causes of obesity continued Dr. Simeons examined several theories. One of the more common theories believed that obesity was caused by sex hormones or dysfunction of the thyroid, pituitary, or adrenal glands. In fact, while dysfunction of any of these glands can be tied in with weight problems the average individual is not obese because of these problems.

Dr. Simeons research eventually led him to study the hypothalamus, a portion of the brain which controls functions such as breathing, heart beat, digestion, sleep, and sex and, with the pituitary gland, helps to regulate the endocrine system.

The Hypothalamus functions in the regulation of blood glucose and other neurohormones and Dr. Simeons hypothesized that if it did that it might also have a role in the regulation of calorie storage when there are excess calories ingested. From this theory he proceeded with research into the use of HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) for weight loss.

Interestingly enough during his research Dr. Simeons discovered that HCG not only produced startling results for weight loss; producing up to a one pound per day loss of fat, but it also helped to stabilize blood sugar in non-brittle diabetics (controlled by oral medication), and also helped hypertensive patients lower their blood pressure.

It is unclear from his research whether or not these positive changes are caused by the HCG treatments or as a by-product of losing the excess weight which is so unhealthy and often causes problems with sugar regulation and elevated blood pressure.

An overview of the HCG weight loss diet shows that with the exception of the first two days of the diet generally referred to as the "Binge Period", the diet is exceedingly healthy. A patient generally eats a diet of 500 calories consisting of small quantities of protein, vegetables, fruits and extremely small amounts of carbohydrate.

This diet, accompanied by drinking 1/2 to 1 gallon of water per day, helps to reset the body's metabolic rate and detox the body. After being on this very clean eating regimen for several weeks patients generally feel better, more energetic, and have lost significant amounts of unwanted, unhealthy, abnormal fat.
